Petition urges Congress to finalize GIPSA rules

A coalition led by the Rural Advancement Foundation International delivered a petition signed by over 62,000 “concerned advocates” to Congress demanding they allow USDA to finalize the Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration rules that would protect the rights of poultry contract growers and ensure fair treatment.

Previous proposed GIPSA rules would have eased the legal standards in which producers could sue processors for “unfair” practices. The Fiscal Year ’17 agricultural appropriations bill passed by the House Appropriations Committee prevents USDA from finalizing any proposed GIPSA rules. The Senate bill does not contain any limitations.
