Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa State University Extension & Outreach are teaming up to offer a series of free meetings across the state to address porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus, increased monitoring for antibiotic residues and market outlook.
Rodney “Butch” Baker, DVM, interim director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center, will cover PED virus including:
What will it take to slow/stop PED virus;
High and low risk biosecurity areas;
The weak link – transport; and
Targeted, comprehensive effort at monitoring all employees, deliveries, manure handling, etc.
James McKean, DVM, Iowa State University, will address details of the Food and Drug Administration’s antibiotic residue limits including:
Changes in residue testing and what to be aware of;
Impacts of detected residues; and
Practical steps to avoid chemical residues.
Lee Schulz, Iowa State University, will provide the market outlook covering:
Surviving in a short corn supply;
Will demand hold for hogs? and
Where’s the big opportunity in 2014?
Conference times and locations are:
Aug. 26 from 1-4 p.m. – Northwest Community College, Sheldon, IA;
Aug. 28 from 1-4 p.m. – Carroll County Extension Office, Carroll, IA;
Aug. 30 from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. – Chickasaw County Extension Office, New Hampton, IA; and
Sept. 3 from 1-4 p.m. – Washington County Extension Office, Washington, IA.
