Biosecurity Resources Available to Help Prevent Disease Outbreaks

Research has shown that diseases like porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) spread quickly via fecal-oral transmission paths. The risk of transferring diseases on manure handling equipment puts extra pressure on both livestock owners and their manure haulers. The eXtension Livestock and Poultry Environmental Learning Center has compiled a reference list of manure biosecurity guidelines and resources with helpful links to fact sheets and educational materials from a variety of sources.

Restricting access of off-farm equipment and personnel involved in manure pumping or manure application and thorough cleaning of equipment between farms are among the recommendations offered in order to help reduce the risk of spreading manure-borne pathogens like PEDV.

The eXtension website offers biosecurity resources for a number of different species and circumstances.
