The 2013 World Pork Expo New Product Review Panel found several products that it considered to be potential “game-changers.” Twenty-eight new products, introduced to the U.S. swine industry this year, were nominated for evaluation during World Pork Expo, held in Des Moines, IA, June 5-7.
Each year, National Hog Farmer asks a panel of the pork industry’s best and brightest leaders to evaluate new products and services on behalf of its pork producer readers. The panel asks hard questions and discusses new ideas and concepts, while pondering how the products would function in a typical hog operation.
This year’s panel was focused on new technology that would benefit producers of all sizes. Panel members found products that would help improve production efficiencies, add to their bottom lines, fine-tune breeding processes and improve the environment for people and pigs.
The 2013 World Pork Expo New Product Review Panel consisted of the following:
Mike Ellis, professor of swine management, University of Illinois — Ellis focuses his research and teaching efforts on helping producers improve production efficiencies throughout their operations.
Steve Hoff, professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering, Iowa State University — Hoff is recognized for his expertise in odor mitigation, ventilation and environmental management issues.
Leon Sheets, Ionia, IA — pork producer and past president of the Iowa Pork Producers Association. Sheets runs a 1,200-sow, farrow-to-feeder pig operation, has a finishing operation and raises row crops.
Paul Yeske, DVM, Swine Vet Center, St. Peter, MN — Yeske provides production and health consulting and management services to a broad producer base. He has worked diligently to help control and eliminate a variety of swine diseases throughout his career.
