Agenda Set for National Forum on Antibiotics

The National Institute for Animal Agriculture (NIAA) has planned a national forum on antibiotics, “Antibiotic Use in Food Animals: A Dialogue for a Common Purpose,” set for Oct. 26-27, 2011 at the Hotel Intercontinental, Chicago O’Hare, Rosemount, IL.

The program opens the afternoon of Oct. 26 with “Antibiotics in Food Animal Production and Human Health,” moderated by Scott Hurd, DVM, associate professor, Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine. Presenting are Mike Apley, DVM, professor, Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and Robert Flamm, director of Antimicrobial Development, JMI Laboratories.

A reception will be held that evening.
In the morning of Oct. 27, a session on “Antibiotics in Food Animal Production” will be moderated by Ron Phillips, vice president of Legislative and Public Affairs, Animal Health Institute.

Panelists will address: beef cattle: Mike Apley; dairy cattle: Mike Lormore, DVM, director of Dairy Veterinary Operations, Pfizer Animal Health; poultry: Hector Cervantes, DVM, senior manager of Poultry Technical Services, North American region, Phibro Animal Health; and swine: Paul Ruen, DVM, Fairmont (MN) Veterinary Clinic.

A second morning session addresses “Human Health Implications Relative to Antibiotic Use” featuring Tom Shryock, DVM, senior research advisor of Microbiology, Elanco Animal Health; William Flynn, DVM, deputy director for Science Policy, Food and Drug Administration, Center for Veterinary Medicine; H. Morgan Scott, DVM, professor, Kansas State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Epidemiology; and Scott Brown, senior director of Metabolism and Safety, Pfizer Animal Health.

After lunch, “Livestock MRSA: Understanding and Communicating the Risks,” will be presented by Peter Davies, professor, University of Minnesota, College of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Veterinary Population Medicine; and Tara Smith, assistant professor, University of Iowa, College of Public Health, Department of Epidemiology.

Wrapping up the conference is Mike Lormore discussing “Reaching Out to Consumers.”
