Four farms have been selected  to be honored as the 2012 Pork Industry Environmental Stewards. The Environmental Stewards recognition program is co-sponsored by National Hog Farmer and Pork Checkoff. Now in its 18th year, nominations are open to pork producers of all types and sizes who demonstrate a positive contribution to our natural environment.

A national selection committee from various pork industry and natural resources disciplines reviews all nominations and selects the winners. Nominations are scored in these areas—general production, manure/nutrient management, soil and water conservation, air quality management, wildlife habitat, neighbor/community relations, and a short essay on the meaning of environmental stewardship.

National Hog Farmer is proud to partner with Specialty Fertilizer Products (SFP) and Pork Checkoff to deliver the positive environmental stewardship message contained in a  special report in the September 15, 2012 issue of our magazine. It is our hope that the class of 2012 Environmental Stewards will inspire the nation’s pork producers as they continue to work hard to be conscientious stewards of our abundant natural resources.

"Once again, the winners of this prestigious award consist of yet another great group of pork producers," said Lynn Harrison, chair of the Environmental Stewards selection subcommittee and former president of the National Pork Board. "The 2012 Stewards are real-world examples of how farmers who produce pork demonstrate the We Care principles every day as natural protectors of the environment and as good neighbors in their communities."

The award recipients will receive the recognition of their peers at the 2013 National Pork Industry Forum next March in Orlando, FL.
