DuPont focuses on food growth and innovation as it marks World Food Day 2010

The company spends 50 percent of its $1.4 billion R&D budget on food

Dubai, Middle East, October 15th, 2010 -- DuPont, one of the leading market-driven science companies continues to develop innovative food technologies as it commemorates World Food Day today. DuPont recently announced the full membership of its advisory committee on Agricultural Innovation & Productivity for the 21st Century. The committee will examine the best public policy mechanisms and business practices to increase global agricultural production and unleash agricultural innovation.

DuPont food Industry solutions focus on food ingredients, food packaging and food safety solutions. DuPont’s food department is intensifying research on plant genetics, crop protection, food safety and packaging, nutrition in support of the global call for better food production practices and technologies.

“The United Nations projects a 34 percent increase in global population representing about 9 billion people - about 150,000 new people to feed every day - by 2050. The Middle East alone is expected to post a population of more than 500 million people by 2030. Increasing agricultural productivity and food availability are essential factors in meeting the United Nations’ Millennium Development Goals by 2015. Hence, it is critical that we become more responsive to our customers needs in the changed global landscape and drive strategic imperatives as a part of our sustainable growth mission. DuPont continues to build its Agriculture & Nutrition pipeline and strategically invest in the emerging markets including Middle East,” he further stated.

Earlier this year, DuPont participated at the 5th Dubai International Food Safety Conference (DIFSC) presenting food safety solutions to meet local food industry challenges. DuPont was also recently recognized by the Wall Street Journal 2010 Technology Innovation Awards for its BAX® System as groundbreaking technology in the fight for global food safety.

October 16 was declared World Food Day in 1979 by the Conference of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. This day is intended to increase public awareness on the global food problem and to unify nations against hunger, malnutrition and poverty.
