States Sue Over California Egg Law

Missouri Attorney General Chis Koster has been joined by five other state attorneys general in filing a lawsuit against California over its law requiring additional space for egg-laying hens.

The law applies to all eggs sold in California including those produced within the state as well as eggs produced in other states but sold in California.

Missouri’s argument is that the Constitution gives Congress the exclusive right to regulate interstate commerce.

The states joining Missouri in the lawsuit are Alabama, Iowa, Kentucky, Nebraska, and Oklahoma.

Koster said that 10 percent of the eggs sold in California come from the six states involved in the lawsuit.

Efforts were made by Congressman Steve King (R-IA) to address this issue in the farm bill.
