Egg bill could be included in Farm Bill

Senate Farm Bill Could Include Egg Bill

Indications are that Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), chairwoman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, plans to include the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the United Egg Producers’ (UEP) egg bill in the chairwoman’s farm bill committee markup.  Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) introduced the bill, Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2013, last month.   The legislation would transition the egg industry from conventional cage housing for layers to enriched colony cage housing by the end of 2029.  The American Farm Bureau, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, National Pork Producers Council and others strongly oppose this legislation.
