Product boasts effectiveness against bacteria, fungus and viruses

Hog producers know the importance of biosecurity to protect their herds from production and economic crippling diseases. They also know the importance of having a toolbox full of weapons at the ready.

Xtreme BioShield from Midwest Ag Solutions is a broad-spectrum disinfectant and detergent that has been tested and proven to kill bacteria, fungus and viruses often associated in concentrated animal feeding operations and critical biosecurity control points.

The product has been shown to deactivate and eliminate pathogens, such as porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus and porcine circovirus type 2, even in the presence of minimal amounts of organic matter left in a trailer or a truck.

Panel judge Gary Anderson, ag engineering professor from South Dakota State University, questioned how the effective recommended rate was arrived at.

Eric Holdmeyer, Midwest Ag Solutions sales, says the recommended dilution rate of 2 ounces per gallon was derived from initial tests against PEDV and PRRSV, where 4 ounces was originally tested. Stronger dilutions may be used, in cases like boot wash at up to 4 ounces per gallon.

He says, Xtreme BioShield’s effectivity is based in its pH level of 14, yet it is nonhazardous to workers or animals, and is odorless, making it more desirable for use in confined spaces with poor ventilation.

Xtreme BioShield can be applied either through spray equipment or foaming equipment, which would be best on vertical surfaces.

Holdmeyer says the product uses plant extracts for a finished product that is a non-irritant if it comes in contact with humans and hogs. Xtreme BioShield is also unique in that it is exempt from Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act registration under the code of federal regulations.
