New app available for detecting hyperthermia in pigs

Degree2act, a new app to detect hyperthermia on pig farms is now available for download on both Google Play and Apple Store. After months of research and on-farm tests BeInFive, a marketing and software company from Barcelona, Spain, launches this new tool for hog farmers to detect potentially ill animals as early as possible.

Fever is usually one of the first signs of an illness, and also one of the most immediate ones, as it is a natural physiopathological response. Degree2act allows hog farmers to detect fever early, enabling individual care to these animals.

Its interface is easy to use, it is very visual. Degree2act works as a traffic light: green light is on when pigs are detected within camera reach, an orange light appears when temperature increase is detected but not significant. When red light appears and a warning message pops up, it means that the animal on screen is very likely to have elevated temperature.

In order to use the app you will need Flir One thermographic camera and a smartphone compatible with it. Thermographic technology is non-invasive and non-destructive and in case of Flir One and Flir One Pro devices also affordable ($250-500 approximately). Usage of thermographic devices in livestock industry has not been very spread due to elevated costs and inconclusive studies, which mainly focused on measuring temperature. Degree2act does not measure exact temperature of an animal; it works within temperature ranges common for each production cycle and detects alterations.

Using Degree2act on a daily basis contributes to:

• save time and money
• provide therapeutic resources more efficiently
• improve animal welfare
• reduce vaccination failure rate
• manage disease outbreaks

Degree project, the origin of the app, has been developed by a group of specialists from the fields of informatics, mathematics, statistics and veterinary science. The needs of veterinarians and farmers have been approached from a new perspective, using affordable technology and establishing the universal availability of Degree2act as a priority.

As a result, two versions have been developed: premium and researcher. Each of them adjusts more to either farmers’ or veterinarians’ needs respectively. Both versions allow users to submit records to our main database for analysis, a collaborative feature that with time will allow expanding to as many breeds and production types as exist. All users contribute to Degree2act fine-tuning, as this project’s development has been based on an idea of common interest and benefit.

Degree2act is available on Google Play and App Store, and you can try it during one-month free trial.
