Seattle recently became the seventh city this year to support legislation banning nontherapeutic uses of antibiotics in livestock.
The Seattle City Council passed a resolution supporting Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY) and Senator Diane Feinstein’s (D-CA) legislation, the “Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act” or PAMTA, which would ban the use of antibiotics in livestock and poultry for growth promotion, prevention, and control.
Antibiotics could only be used for treatment purposes or when the animal is sick. Food and Water Watch is leading this effort through its “Campaign to Save Antibiotics.”
The effort is to build support at the local level through city councils and county boards to pass resolutions in support of PAMTA.
Other cities that have passed similar resolutions this year are Cleveland, OH; Madison, WI; Pittsburgh, PA; Providence, RI; Red Bank, NJ: and St. Paul, MN. The issue of antibiotics use in animals is never ending.
